MORE ABOUT RANDY

Randy was born in Fremont, Michigan — famously known as the birthplace of Gerber Baby Food — and raised in the Muskegon and Hesperia areas. Growing up in a hard-working, blue-collar family, his parents both held careers in manufacturing, instilling in Randy a strong work ethic and deep respect for honest labor.

As a young man, Randy developed a lifelong love for sports, playing basketball, baseball, and football throughout his school years. He also found joy in the outdoors, especially hunting with his late grandfather, father, and uncle — a family tradition that remains close to his heart.

After graduating from Hesperia High School, Randy took a year off to focus on his future. During that time, he worked in both commercial and residential construction. It was in that season of reflection and hard work that Randy discovered his true calling: a career in law enforcement.

In early 2002, Randy relocated to Johnston County, North Carolina, where he enrolled in Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at Johnston Community College. He proudly graduated in December of that year and immediately began his career in service.

Randy’s first role in sworn law enforcement was with West-Tek Company Police, where he served communities across North Carolina, including Durham, Smithfield, Selma, and Benson. After nearly a year, he joined the Four Oaks Police Department before being hired by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office in 2006.

At the Sheriff’s Office, Randy began in the Patrol Division and quickly advanced. He was promoted to Detective in the Property Crimes Division and later served in the Major Crimes Division, where he remained until March 2025. Over the years, Randy earned multiple honors for his work, including Detective of the Month and Detective of the Year (2015)from the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office — recognitions that reflect his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to justice.

Beyond the badge, Randy is a devoted husband and father. He met his wife, Jaime Southerland, in 2006, and they married in 2008. Together, they are raising their two boys in the Wilson’s Mills community — a place they proudly call home.

Randy is a member of Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church, an active supporter of the Fraternal Order of Police (where he served as Past President), and a committed member of the Johnston County Republican Party.
